Unit 7003 Experience Design

The ideal game experience is to use two different sight of views with logic. Third-person view is from a drone, it moves fast and has a wild vision. The first-person view is from robot vehicle, precise but narrow. Compare to games nowadays, the third-person view is not a void camera which makes a lot more sense. 

The other benefit is changing camera give players more playable control in-game, just like playing two characters.

In the Star Wars project, it is obvious that the right decision in the early stage is vital.
Including lighting, object function, ship factors are hard to change or modify when the project was almost finished.



Build this and it will have to work. This means the design should be more careful under a good aesthetic. It is also an important thing at an early stage, sometimes design looks cool does not solve the problem.



Wesley's sketches are various, " I found some interesting lines and shapes in the sketch phase and then the idea took hold". Finding a good way of drawing character will help me easy to get some ideas, and when I try it I realise it could help go into a stage that I will not feel tried and forget the pass of time. This is the very first reason why I love drawing many years ago.

 

John Park has a very clear plan to design things. Ideas come from real life is the key.
How to turn real-life items into designs is a vital skill to the concept designers. Imaging things out of nowhere is really hard, not to mention designing a vehicle with structure. I learn to draw similar structures at first and combine similar real vehicles into my designs.

Ian has a really good colour pad in his drawings, grey-green, grey-yellow, really good colour for metal vehicles. Hard edges but not sharp is also a good way to deal with shapes.

Unit 7003 Sotry Brief

Near future, demining is still a high-risk job. There is a new device combine with vehicle and drone. It has a better view of searching bomb and flexibility to climb.

Every year, over 20000 people were killed by mines and bombs.

In the Year 2025, because of lower-risk job policy came out, many jobs start to think about how to reduce injuries and death possibility again.

Agent K received a mission, there is a high possibility that few bombs were planted in a house.

With K1 Demining Multi-Tool Robot, agent K does not need to worry put himself in danger.

A drone takes off the platform from the back of K1, using high tech camera, agent K has found 5 bombs in the house. After recording all the position of bombs, agent K start to control the K1 robot moves to the operation area. Because of quick searching, agent K has defused all 5 bombs within 10 mins.



Unit Reading: The Aesthetics of Liminality: Augmentation as Artform

Since 5G came out, it solved a lot of problems that we had before. AR goggles can show huge information, but it does not have enough database to store it. The cloud technology is the solution, when we have enough internet speed, not only AR but also games can run on the server instead of your own computer. What you will receive is just a live stream, it will reduce gamers cost on devices. They do not need to build a 2000 pounds PC to play a 4K video game, all they need to buy is a TV and a good internet.

Unit reading: The Virtuous Cycle of Immersion

There is a very interest thing is how to tell the story while we are in an immersive game environment. Most AAA games use animation to act story which is obvious, some are using words to tell. Games like Dark Souls do not show the story directly, they will lead the player into imagination because the old gods are not predictable, you cannot tell what are they thinking and how do they look like. That is a beauty in it, that is why sometimes novels are better than the comic book. Because we are using our imagination to fill the lack of view. As we are in an immersive game, objects also tell a story. Put wine bottles and ashtray on the desk might tell us what will this person normally do during work.

Unit reading: Immersion, engagement and presence

Just like it said now 3D is a big trend in video games, VR makes a big part of that. As a game, interact with game objects is vital. This makes the game different from the movie. On the VR platform, my personal thought is developing visual experience rather than interaction experience. Like what we know, sitting in the roller coaster to shoot the zombies and sitting in the cockpit to flying around. This kind of experience will give players a platform to accept their presence in-game. In other words, they are standing still and use other methods to move, like driving a car. In the meanwhile, we should focus on big simulating gears to free us from a simple chair.
